A bigger bloc of suburban, college-educated, GOP-leaning voters are reportedly undecided in this year's presidential race than in 2012, potentially giving Donald Trump an opening.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the GOP nominee's task won't be easy: Almost eight in 10 of those voters have negative views of both Trump and Hillary Clinton – suggesting they might just sit out this year's election.

The Journal reported this year's undecided voters' pool also differs from previous years in a number of ways: They represent about 13 percent of all voters, compared with 8 percent in 2012, are better education, more engaged and lean Republican.

"These are not the less-engaged, weakly partisan people," GOP pollster Bill McInturff told the Journal. "They're better-educated people who lean Republican, who don't like Trump and have zero use for Hillary Clinton, and they're sort of paralyzed and frozen right now."

Analysis by the firm Survey Monkey, which specializes in online polling, concluded more Republicans than Democrats are undecided, with independents outnumbering both, according to The Journal.

And that could be key for Trump.

"Should every undecided voter cast a ballot, these results suggest an opportunity for Trump to narrow Clinton’s lead," the company's polling director Mark Blumenthal wrote about the study, the Journal reported.

But the data also suggests being undecided correlates with skipping the election, the Journal reported.

"So, the slightly greater Republican skew of the totally undecided may be early signs of lower than usual turnout on the horizon among Republican partisans," Blumenthal wrote, per the report.
