Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., Sunday said there was no misstep by President Donald Trump’s legal team in referring to Ukraine meddling in the 2016 election.

In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Cotton was pressed about Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow alluding to a conspiracy theory that it was Ukraine that interfered in the 2016 election, despite U.S. intelligence agencies concluding it was Russia that interfered.

“You can accept Russia interfered… you can also say it’s clear some Ukrainian officials tried to influence the outcome of the 2016 election,” Cotton said. “Both of those things can be true.”

Cotton also said he wasn’t troubled by Trump demanding to "get rid of" former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.

“The president has the right to remove any ambassador… and badmouthing the president is a pretty sound reason,” he said.

According to Cotton, “I don’t think [a tape of the demand] affects any Senate votes” on Trump’s removal after an impeachment trial.
