A top Ukrainian official says his country has received about 500 tons of defense equipment from the United States.
Oleksii Reznikov, Ukraine’s minister of defense, made his comments in a Tuesday tweet.
Reznikov wrote: "The day hasn't passed yet and we're unloading the 6th bird from our friends from the U.S.! 84 tons of ammunition arrived in Kyiv!" In total, for today, we've received about 500 tons of defense equipment from the U.S. And this isn’t the end."
The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, referencing the tweet from Reznikov, wrote: "We vastly prefer the path of dialogue and diplomacy, but we will continue to provide Ukraine the defensive assistance needed to defend against Russia’s massive military force assembled on its borders. We #StandWithUkraine."
Reuters reported that the Pentagon said it is actively discussing with Eastern European allies about possibly deploying U.S. troops at NATO’s eastern edge in the face of the Russian military building near Ukraine.
"We're going through the rigorous work of providing options for the commander in chief should he decide to do that ... in close consultation with the actual allies themselves," Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.
Any new troop deployments would be separate from the 8,500 military personnel in the U.S. who were put on alert last week to possibly aid a NATO response force, Reuters noted.
