UAW: Romney Misleads Voters on Auto Bailouts

Friday, 17 February 2012 01:32 PM EST

The nation's auto worker union slammed Republican hopeful Mitt Romney today saying the former Massachusetts governor opposed the government bailout of Chrysler and General Motors in 2009 and is trying to "rewrite history," Automotivenews.com reports.

Romney has said he didn't believe in the bailouts but instead supported a 'managed' private sector bankruptcy reorganization for the two automakers, although experts have said no such program existed at the time.

UAW President Bob King said Romney, who has been campaigning in Michigan ahead of the Feb. 28 primary, is “misleading voters” when it comes to the bailouts.

“He’s trying to rewrite history and attack President Obama and the UAW for successfully saving the auto industry,” King said in a statement released Friday.
