President Donald Trump on Sunday said a Senate impeachment trial would only give the “partisan Democrat Witch Hunt” credibility.
“Many believe that by the Senate giving credence to a trial based on the no evidence, no crime, read the transcripts, “no pressure” Impeachment Hoax, rather than an outright dismissal, it gives the partisan Democrat Witch Hunt credibility that it otherwise does not have. I agree!” he tweeted.
An impeachment trial is expected this week. Trump is the third president facing potential removal from office following impeachment by the House.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday signaled in a letter to colleagues that she would transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate this week, a move she held off on to pressure Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell into naming fairer terms for the trial.
“We wanted the public to see the need for witnesses, witnesses with firsthand knowledge of what happened, [and] documentation,” she said Sunday during an interview with ABC News host George Stephanopoulos.
When Stephanopoulos noted that McConnell “didn’t budge on witnesses at all,” Pelosi said he would be “accountable to the American people for that.”
“They take an oath to have a fair trial,” she said. “Now the ball is in their court to either do that or pay a price for not doing it.”
Trump earlier defended himself from the impending trial.
“Why should I have the stigma of Impeachment attached to my name when I did NOTHING wrong? Read the Transcripts! A totally partisan Hoax, never happened before,” he said. “House Republicans voted 195-0, with three Dems voting with the Republicans. Very unfair to tens of millions of voters!”
