President Donald Trump on Monday spread a local newspaper's endorsement of the Republican candidate in the race for Pennsylvania's open House seat.
Trump tweeted about Rick Saccone's endorsement by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, and slammed Democratic candidate Conor Lamb as "weak on crime and [the] border."
The newspaper on Sunday said Saccone "has a wealth of experience and an intimate knowledge of much of the district, because he has represented a part of it in the Legislature. He is a good fit for the district and would be an effective representative for it from his first day on the job."
Trump attended a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday to support Saccone, but has reportedly expressed misgivings about the candidate in private.
Politico and Axios both report that Trump has described Saccone as "weak," a poor candidate and a bad fundraiser, and that the president and other GOP officials see Lamb, who is running a well-organized campaign as a moderate candidate, as a legitimate threat in a district Trump won by 20 points.
