Donald Trump's private jet has been grounded — because its registration expired months ago.

An FAA spokesperson confirmed to The New York Times that the registration for Trump's 1997 Cessna 750 Citation X ran out on Jan. 31 and has not been renewed.

That means the Republican presidential front-runner will now have to use one of his other planes or take commercial flights to jet from city to city for campaign appearances until the lapsed registration is sorted out.

Asked about the report by FoxNews.com, Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks said: "The standard renewal process is just about complete."

The FAA told The Times the civil penalty for flying with an expired registration is as much as $27,500, while a criminal fine could be as high as $250,000.

The most severe punishment would be a maximum of three years behind bars. But the agency said such penalties would be unlikely in this case.

Trump's plane "could be grounded for several days, or even months, while the issue is sorted out," The Times said, noting the Cessna had been flown as recently as Monday.
