President Donald Trump on Monday called for the U.S. Senate to support a bill intended to suppress illegal shipments of fentanyl through the international postal system.
“It is outrageous that Poisonous Synthetic Heroin Fentanyl comes pouring into the U.S. Postal System from China,” Trump tweeted Monday morning.
The bipartisan Synthetics Trafficking and Overdose Prevention Act, or STOP Act, passed the House in June, but has yet to have a hearing in the Senate.
“We can, and must, END THIS NOW! The Senate should pass the STOP ACT – and firmly STOP this poison from killing our children and destroying our country,” Trump added. “No more delay!”
The bill would require that the U.S. Postal Service install a tracking system used by private shippers to stamp down on fentanyl trafficking, as well as other provisions.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 72,000 people died of a drug overdose in the United States last year, with fentanyl being one of the leading causes.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has come under scrutiny for his role in delaying a vote on legislation, with his critics suggesting that he’s avoided a vote because the bill’s passing could help red-state Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections, though his office has denied this.
