Tech titan and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel is reportedly being considered by the incoming Trump administration for an appointment as U.S. Ambassador to Germany.

The New York Post reported Thiel – who was born in West Germany, moved to America as a toddler, and speaks German – has been in talks about the diplomatic post, and a decision about the appointment could come this week.

"No decisions have been made," Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks told The Post.

Talk of the post has been swirling in Silicon Valley and Berlin in recent weeks, according to the Post.

"At first I thought it was silly," one unnamed tech source told the Post. "But maybe it’s a good way for him to get away, which somebody said he wouldn’t mind doing, given all the negative energy he faced."

Thiel was criticized by left-leaning colleagues in the industry for backing Donald Trump; last month he organized a meeting between tech industry stalwarts and the president-elect.

Trump has been cleaning house at U.S. embassies worldwide, and America's traditional hierarchy of ambassadorships may be getting an overhaul, the Post reported.

"Germany is running Europe now," one unnamed source told the newspaper.
