President Donald Trump continued his verbal war with former CIA Director John Brennan Tuesday, tweeting that "Even James Clapper" knows that Trump critic Brennan has "gone totally off the rails."
Trump tweeted:
"Even James Clapper has admonished John Brennan for having gone totally off the rails. Maybe Clapper is being nice to me so he doesn’t lose his Security Clearance for lying to Congress!"
Brennan has gotten under Trump's skin with his declarations and innuendos about Trump's fitness for office and ties to Russia which led the president to announce revocation of his security clearance and take aim at information access by other former officials, including Clapper.
Trump's Tuesday tweet appears to refer to recent Clapper remarks about Brennan's loud criticism of Trump, including repeated accusations of "treasonous" behavior alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin last month.
"The common denominator among all of us that have been speaking up, though, is genuine concern about the jeopardy or threats to our institutions and values," former National Intelligence Director James Clapper, himself a frequent Trump critic, said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." ''But John and his rhetoric have become, I think, an issue in and of itself."
