Likely North Carolina voters are split on who they are backing for president, according to a new poll.

A Meredith College poll released Monday indicates that former Vice President Joe Biden has a slight edge over President Donald Trump among likely voters in the battleground state.

Poll results show:

  • 45.7% of likely North Carolina voters back Biden.
  • 45.4% of likely North Carolina voters say they will reelect Trump.
  • 43.1% of Independents in the state say they will vote for Trump, which is more than the 39.8% who say they will vote for Biden.

“North Carolina is shaping up to be the key battleground everyone thought it would be heading into the election cycle,” Meredith's poll director David McLennan said. “Although Trump has gained some ground with key groups like Hispanic voters, he is running behind Biden among suburban voters and women voters, two key groups that will determine the outcome of the presidential race in North Carolina.”

Former President Barack Obama carried the state in 2008. But North Carolina went to the GOP in 2012 and 2016.

The state also has a key Senate race that falls within the poll’s margin of error. According to poll results, 43.1% of likely voters prefer Democrat challenger Cal Cunningham to the 41.8% of likely voters who back incumbent GOP Sen. Thom Tillis.

Likely voters support the current Democrat Gov. Roy Cooper, 49.6%, over his Republican challenger Lt. Gov. Dan Forest, 39.3%.

The poll surveyed 705 likely voters in North Carolina between Sept. 18-22. The poll has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
