President Donald Trump said Thursday that former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon "changed his tune pretty quick."

Speaking at the start of immigration talks with Republican lawmakers, Trump was asked if Bannon had betrayed him over quotes attributed to him in a scathing new book.

"He called me a great man last night. He obviously changed his tune pretty quick," Trump told reporters. "I don't talk to him. I don't talk to him. That's just a misnomer."

Trump is working with lawmakers to create an immigration system that will serve American workers and improve security, adding he thinks Congress has a good shot at passing an immigration reform bill.

Trump said he thought the bill would address the problem of undocumented people who came to the United States as children. But he also said it must include a border wall as well as measures to end chain migration and the current visa lottery program.

"Hopefully, everything is going to work out very well," Trump said. "If we have support from the Democrats, I think DACA is going to be terrific," he added, referring to the law dealing with so-called Dreamers who came to the United States as undocumented children.

"We need protection, we need the wall, we need all of those things, and I think a lot of Democrats agree with us when they see what is happening and they see the kind of problems we're having at the border, they really understand it," Trump said.

"I think it can be bipartisan. I hope it will be bipartisan and we can take care of a lot of problems," Trump said. "It would be really nice to do it in a bipartisan way."
