About 2,600 active-duty military members will spend Christmas on the U.S.-Mexico border, Stars and Stripes reported.

The number of troops supporting Customs and Border Protection agents in California, Arizona and Texas is down from a high of 5,900, the military news outlet reported.

As of last Friday, 700 service members were stationed in Texas, 700 in Arizona and 1,200 in California.

The troops’ border support — initiated by President Donald Trump to bolster protection ahead of a migrant caravan from Central America — started Oct. 31 and is expected to end Jan. 31, Stars and Stripes reported.
