Trump Effect Could Crush Pat Toomey's Pa. Senate Run

Pat Toomey's Senate run in Pennsylvania could suffer greatly over a bombshell tape in which Donald Trump uses crude language about women.

The Senate race in the Keystone State is considered 1 of the 3 most vulnerable for the GOP. “This Trump tape could hurt Toomey because of the down ballot effect,” Franklin and Marshall professor G. Terry Madonna told me. “It makes it harder to get voters out, and means more efforts to get split tickets down ballot.”

A Franklin and Marshall College poll released last week showed Democrat Katie McGinty leading Republican Sen. Pat Toomey by a margin of 41 percent to 35 percent.

Madonna, considered the premier pollster in the state, said Trump’s latest storm “will make it really difficult for Trump to carry the state. We need to see the polls next week after the debate.”

According to Franklin and Marshall’s last survey before the tape came out late Friday night, Hillary Clinton leads Trump in Pennsylvania by a margin of 47 percent to 38 percent among likely voters statewide. The same survey showed Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson drawing 5 percent in the Pennsylvania.

Madonna added that, despite the calls for Trump to resign the presidential nomination in favor of Pence, “I see no change in the ticket — and Pence stays officially on as vice president, too.”
