Sen. Tom Cotton Wednesday praised President Donald Trump's "common sense" executive actions on immigration, calling on Congress for broader reform.
"It's long past time that we take control of our border, and the best way to do that is to build a wall," the Arkansas Republican said. "We also can’t expect other people to follow our laws if we don’t enforce them ourselves.
"These executive orders are simply common sense, and they have my full support," he said.
Trump signed the orders at the Department of Homeland Security, beginning efforts to build a wall along the U.S-Mexico border and to strip federal funding for sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate on immigration enforcement.
"We are going to restore the rule of law in the United States," the president said. "A nation without borders is not a nation."
But Cotton called for stronger immigration reform, which would involve new legislation approved by Congress.
"But we must do more," he said in a statement. "Congress should build on this work by creating an immigration system that boosts our economy and promotes the interests of the American people."
