Sen. Tom Cotton: Issues, Not Emails, Decided Hillary's Fate

The presidential election was decided on the issues that mattered to Americans, not because of fake news or leaked emails from hacked Democratic operatives' servers, Sen. Tom Cotton said Friday.

"This election was decided in key states based on issues that mattered to Americans like job growth and wages, crime, law and order on our streets, and immigration," the Arkansas Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program.

"It is not based on inside gossip or so-called fake news."

Cotton as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, participated in a briefing on Thursday with the nation's highest intelligence officers, but still isn't convinced the interference changed who eventually would have won the race.

"I have not seen the report that President [Barack] Obama received yesterday and [President-elect Donald] Trump will receive today," said Cotton. "I'll be interested in seeing all of the conclusions, but also the evidence supporting those claims. Again, I think all the claims like fake news and Vladimir Putin and Jim Comey are mostly crying over spilled milk."

Further, said Cotton, he doesn't think Putin or any Russian diplomat or spy "understood the American elections any better than most American pundits did themselves," said Cotton.

"You hear loose talk about attacking our democracy and hacking into the DNC and [John] Podesta's email," said Cotton, as assigning motives to "foreign leaders is among the hardest tasks we ask an intelligence service to do on anything. If you have good evidence, it's often evidence that you simply cannot reveal because of the highly sensitive source and method of it."

But at the same time, Cotton said, "I don't think many people in Michigan and Wisconsin were paying to the gossip of a bunch of political operatives. Unless they canceled the rallies for Clinton in Wisconsin and Michigan, I don't think it had an effect."

Further it was Clinton's decision to create her own private email server, prompting an investigation by the FBI, said Cotton.

"The Democrats need to look in the mirror and think about why they lost the election and stop blaming it on Comey, the Electoral College, or fake news," said Cotton. "We need to take seriously the threat Russia poses to the United States. They ought not to have hacked into the emails and they need to pay a price for that.

"That's a small example that Russia has taken against you, the United States in the last eight years. Barack Obama is coming a little late to the conclusion that Russia is a geopolitical adversary."
