Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., confirmed Friday that reports referring to President Donald Trump's alleged comments about Haiti and some African nations are "basically accurate."

Scott told The Post and Courier he spoke with Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who was in the Thursday White House meeting with other lawmakers and Trump when the president allegedly referred to the aforementioned nations as "s**thole countries."

"If that comment is accurate, the comment is incredibly disappointing," Scott told the newspaper.

"We ought not to disparage any other nation, frankly. Thinking about the success of America. It is the melting pot. It's the ability to weave together multiple communities together for one nation."

Graham has not publicly commented on the story, which has made headlines around the world. Two other Republicans who were in the meeting, Sens. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and David Perdue, R-Ga., released a joint statement in which they said, "We do not recall the president saying these comments specifically, but what he did call out was the imbalance in our current immigration system, which does not protect American workers and our national interest."
