Gingrich: Santorum is ‘Big Labor Republican’

By    |   Monday, 27 February 2012 04:17 PM EST

If Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is to reassert himself as the primary conservative threat to Mitt Romney, he’s going to have to leapfrog Rick Santorum. So it should come as no shock that the former House speaker went on the attack against the former Pennsylvania senator Monday, calling him a stooge of labor unions, Politico reports.

"When you come South, take the case right here: He voted for the unions over FedEx," Gingrich said at a campaign lunch in Nashville. "Now I suspect most people in the state don’t know that, but in fact he was a big labor Republican in Pennsylvania. And I suspect when we go to Memphis and say to people, gee, this is a guy who wanted to guarantee that FedEx would give in to the unions, Santorum won't be as popular the following morning."

Santorum has soared in the polls in recent weeks, leaving Gingrich in the dust nationally and catching up to — or surpassing — Romney.

But Gingrich said Santorum’s loss of his Senate seat in 2006 is indicative of problems ahead. "The fact is, I think there are profound reasons that Rick lost the Senate race by the largest margin in Pennsylvania history in 2006, and I think it’s very hard for him to carry that all the way to the general," he said.
