He's no Ted Turner and his mother is not Hanoi Jane.
That’s the message that Teddy Turner, one of CNN mogul Ted Turner’s five children, is trying to get across in a crowded field of conservative candidates for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.
He’s anti-tax, opposes same-sex marriage and questions global warming. And he’s not, definitely not, Jane Fonda’s son.
“Yes, I’m Teddy Turner. You can’t pick your parents,” he introduced himself to a Republican gathering at Hilton Head Island recently, Politico reports.
He’s been trash-talking is father a lot to prove his message to the ultra-conservative constituents of his district.
In Beaufort, Turner joked that he ribbed his father at Thanksgiving for his liberal environmental views — calling him a hypocrite for driving a green car only to jet around the country on his CO2-spewing private plane.
Teddy Turner, a 49-year-old high school economics teacher, is running in a crowded Republican primary that includes former S.C. Governor Mark Sanford.
His father remains one of the best know liberals, a huge supporter of Obama who has been staunchly anti-war and was married for a time to Jane Fonda.
“My dad is one of the most successful figures in American history, and he’s outspoken. It’s kind of the 800-pound gorilla in the room,” Turner said in an interview. “It’s something I want to address because people have questions. … I can’t escape it.”
