Ted Cruz: 'We Should Do Whatever It Takes' to Confirm Trump SCOTUS Nominee

(Fox News/"Hannity")

Sen. Ted Cruz said Republicans should make sure that President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee gets confirmed.

"I think we should do whatever it takes to get him confirmed," the Texas Republican said Tuesday on Fox News' "Hannity."

"Let me actually do something I don't do a lot, which is praise Mitch McConnell," Cruz continued.

"What Mitch has said to the Republican conference is he has encouraged all of us to go out and simply say we will confirm President Trump's nominees. The Democrats will not succeed in filibustering those nominees. I think that's fabulous."

Getting the nominee confirmed requires 60 votes in the Senate, so Republicans need to add at least eight Democrats to gain that threshold. Cruz did not rule out using the "nuclear option" that reduces that number to a majority.

That would leave an opening for Democrats in the future to use that same tactic, according to The Hill.

One likely candidate for Trump's nominee is Denver Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Neil Gorsuch.

The Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he would fight "tooth and nail" against Trump's nomination unless the president provides a "mainstream" candidate.

Trump on Wednesday tweeted that he will announce his Supreme Court pick next Thursday:
