Sen. Ted Cruz says new legislation he has introduced will allow parents more school choice options, allowing them to have more control over their children's education.
"My amendment expands 529, so now you can not only save to go to college, you can also spend from your 529 plan on K-12 education expenses," Cruz, a Texas Republican, said Wednesday in an interview with Fox News.
"[That's] for public schools, for private schools, for religious schools, for homeschooling — up to $10,000 a year."
The 529 plan is an education savings program with tax advantages which helps families set aside funds for future college costs.
The amendment is now in the Senate's version of the tax plan. It barely passed last Friday when it was stuck at 50-50, requiring Vice President Mike Pence to break the tie.
The Senate and House must now meld their tax plans into a final bill that would be signed by President Donald Trump.
