Most Americans feel tax reform plans would favor the wealthy, according to the new CBS News Nation Tracker poll.
Fifty-eight percent of Americans say the current proposals being discussed would favor the rich compared to 18 percent who think the reforms would favor the middle class. Another 19 percent say the changes would treat everyone equally.
Donald Trump and GOP leadership have promised that wealthy Americans won’t get a massive tax cut, but experts told Politico that it would be difficult for the president to keep his promise because higher earners already shoulder most of the tax burden.
"It's basically impossible to have a large tax cut that doesn’t involve most of the benefits going to high-income groups just because that’s who pays taxes now," said Adam Looney, the deputy assistant Treasury secretary for tax analysis in the Obama administration.
Trump has attempted to court Democrats during the rollout, and said it was "time for both parties to come together" on taxes.
Nine of 10 Americans polled in the Nation Tracker survey said they like or are willing to accept the idea of the president making deals with Democrats, in principle.
The CBS News poll was conducted by YouGov using a nationally representative sample of 2,371 U.S. adults reached from Oct. 11 through Oct. 13.
