Republican lawmakers are privately grousing that President Donald Trump sucked all the air out of the new tax law, citing falling poll numbers on their signature achievement, the Washington Examiner reports.
Once Trump started in on tariffs and the ensuing threat of trade wars, all of the positive momentum Republicans had built up on the Tax Cuts and Job Act suffered, the Examiner reports.
Publicly, Republicans know they have to take the lead on marketing the tax cuts.
"People aren’t talking about it enough, and when people aren’t talking about it enough, that’s a problem," the Examiner quoted Rep. Steve Stivers, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
"Republicans have a lot of work in front of them to make sure people understand the benefits of the tax bill, and nobody is going to be driving this but them," GOP pollster David Winston told the Examiner. "The signature achievement for Congressional Republicans for this Congress will have been the tax bill — no matter what else they do."
