Former Attorney General Eric Holder said "supporters" of President Donald Trump are "fanning" the sexual assault allegations made by former Senate staffer Tara Reade against presidential hopeful Joe Biden.
"It's interesting that the people who are trying to fan this thing are the very people who support Donald Trump and, of course, who say nothing about the allegations that have been raised, I think very credibly, against Trump from a number of women – you know, rape – from a long period of time," Holder said during an appearance on "Real Time with Bill Maher."
"I mean, all of these allegations have to be taken seriously," Holder continued. "People who raise them should be treated sensitively."
Holder said the sexual assault accusations against Biden are not representative of the person he has known for more than 20 years.
"What has been described is inconsistent with the person who I've come to know and I've worked with," Holder said. "I think the media is doing a correct job looking into the allegations, finding out a variety of things. The vice president has denied that it actually did occur. And as I said, his denial is consistent with the Joe Biden that I know."
However, some of the people who support Reade's claim have a history of backing liberal candidates. Susan Sarandon, a known supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., tweeted out a Business Insider article that published accounts from Reade's former neighbor corroborating the former Senate staffer allegation.
The Intercept's Ryan Grim published the transcript of a "Larry King Live Show" from 1993 where Reade's mother anonymously called the program to talk about issues her daughter had with a "prominent" senator.
Also, The New York Times has recently called for the Democratic National Committee to investigate Reade's claims of sexual assault.
During an MSNBC interview Friday, Biden denied the allegations and called on the Secretary of Senate to locate the complaint that was made against him in 1993.
