President Donald Trump ripped Sweden on Thursday for not taking steps to lock down due to the coronavirus outbreak.

His comments came in a morning tweet. He wrote: “Despite reports to the contrary, Sweden is paying heavily for its decision not to lockdown. As of today, 2462 people have died there, a much higher number than the neighboring countries of Norway (207), Finland (206) or Denmark (443). The United States made the correct decision!”

Sweden has relied on asking people to voluntarily avoid nonessential travel, to work from home and to stay home if they are elderly or have some other underlying health issue that would put them at risk.

Many countries, including Sweden’s immediate neighbors, have put those rules in the force of law rather than suggestion.

Sweden’s death toll per million has stayed below that of Spain and Italy, but has surpassed its neighbors, sparking criticism.
