Sen. Susan Collins on Monday became the latest Republican to call for Roy Moore to step down from running in Alabama's special election.

Collins, like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell earlier in the day, abandoned the "if the charges are true" mantra to say that the former Alabama Supreme Court judge should just go away.

"I have now read Mr. Moore's statement and listened to his radio interview in which he denies the charges. I did not find his denials to be convincing and believe that he should withdraw from the Senate race in Alabama," Collins said in a statement on Monday.

Moore has remained resolute and defiant, saying he will move forward in his race for the special election next month to replace the vacant Senate seat left by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

McConnell earlier Monday said he is mulling whether to endorse interim Sen. Luther Strange, who Moore soundly defeated in the special GOP primary, as a write-in candidate for the Dec. 12 special election.
