Tom Steyer's Super PAC Targets GOP's Gomez in Mass. Senate Race

San Francisco Billionaire Tom Steyer's super PAC is planning to launch a new campaign against the Republican candidate in the Massachusetts Senate race.

The NextGen Committee will portray Gabriel Gomez as a "lightweight version of Mitt Romney," according to a memo obtained by Politico that was sent Thursday to the super PAC’s Massachusetts campaign team.

"Our message in these various efforts will focus on the fact that Gabriel Gomez is Mitt Lite . . . More Right Wing, Less Experienced," it reads, adding, "He is a Bush-Cheney-Romney Republican who is anti-choice, anti-Social Security, pro-assault weapon, and pro-Big Oil."

The memo explains that NextGen will fund "guerrilla marketing," a field campaign targeting likely voters and "paid media with a specific focus on using digital and online tools to target persuasion voters."

NextGen also played a role in the Democratic primary, reportedly spending hundreds of thousands on a campaign to attack Rep. Stephen Lynch for his initial support of the Keystone XL oil pipeline. Lynch lost to Rep. Ed Markey, who now faces Gomez, a former Navy SEAL, in the June 25 general election.

"From what little there is to know about Gomez, we've realized that he is simply a lightweight version of Mitt Romney . . . but without the experience," states the memo, which according to Politico was written by Chris Lehane, who served in the Clinton White House and is now a key adviser to Steyer and Next Gen.

Markey, who reportedly signed a pledge to limit outside spending in the campaign, has called on Steyer and his super PAC to stay out of the race.
