Despite Donald Trump's protests to the contrary, U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel is being quite fair toward him in the lawsuit alleging fraud by Trump University, says lawyer and journalist Steven Brill.
Brill,
who wrote about the case for Time in November, says that, if anything, the judge has been unfair to the former students who are suing Trump University.
"If anything, this judge had bent over backwards in granting multiple delays in favor of Mr. Trump," Brill said Monday on
"MSNBC Live."
Trump has taken after the judge in the media in recent days, saying he can't judge his case fairly because his parents were originally from Mexico, and Trump is calling for a border wall to keep out illegal Mexican immigrants. Curiel himself was born in the United States.
"This is totally outrageous," Brill said. "This is just pure racism, and we should call it for what it is, racism."
Trump said in interviews on Sunday that "a lot of lawyers" have told him the judge has been unfair to him and the case should be dismissed. Brill challenged journalists to ask Trump to name those lawyers.
Should Curiel recuse himself, Brill said, Trump would likely get another judge who would be far less favorable to him.
