House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., suited up and returned to the baseball field – a year after he was seriously wounded while practicing for a congressional charity baseball game, CBS News is reporting.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., noted the occasion and tweeted: “@SteveScalise back on the field this morning. This does my heart good.”

Flake’s tweet also included a photo of Scalise in uniform practicing.

And Scalise tweeted: "It was great to be on the ball field this morning. Can’t wait for @TheHillBaseball on June 14th."

The annual charity game, which pits Republicans against Democrats, will be held at the Washington Nationals’ ball park.

Scalise was shot last June while practicing in Alexandria, Virginia for the 2017 charity game. The gunman, James Hodgkinson, died following a shootout with police.

CBS News said Scalise still uses crutches to walk, but told reporters that he "felt great" after the practice.
