Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa — stripped of his committee assignments after making offensive remarks that embraced white supremacy — wants them back, The Hill reported.
In a letter King tweeted Tuesday, more than 200 of what King described as "pro-family leaders" asked House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., to reinstate the lawmaker's committee assignments.
The supporters included former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, William Owens, founder and president of the Coalition of African American Pastors, and evangelical leader James Dobson.
"Don't make the fatal mistake of turning the reins of the U.S. Congress over to the liberal media, allowing them to target, misquote, and falsely brand any member of Congress they wish to remove," the letter urges.
The Iowa Republican previously served on the House Judiciary, Agriculture and Small Business committees. He first won election to the House in 2002.
King released the letter hours after President Donald Trump called for freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., to get bounced from committee assignments over comments condemned as anti-Semitic.
