Rep. Steve King has challenged Sen. Chuck Schumer to a duel (of sorts) after Schumer accused him of being xenophobic for his hard-line approach to immigration reform and past controversial comments,
Politico reported.
Earlier this month, Schumer, a New York Democrat,
slammed Iowa Republican King, saying he was "spewing hatred" against illegal immigrants and leading fellow Republicans "over the cliff" on the issue, adding that Republicans will never have a chance of taking power from Democrats if they don't pass a controversial immigration reform bill this year.
"If we're going to have some kind of rhetoric bouncing back between the House and Senate, let's do it face to face, let's do it eye to eye," King, the Iowa Republican, said Thursday on the House floor. "Let's have that duel, not like Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, but I would be the one standing on the high ground."
"Let's do it like many men today — not duel with 50 paces and pistols, but let's do it with microphones within arm's reach," King continued. "Maybe we can get to the bottom of it and see who would have the xenophobia."
King criticized several Senate Democratic leaders, but many of his comments were directed at Schumer who co-authored the comprehensive immigration bill that passed the Senate last June, Politico reported.
Schumer issued a retort on Twitter.
