Stephen Strang, the author of "God and Donald Trump," said he and other evangelicals are able to support President Trump by focusing on Trump's policies, not his personal life.

"The issue for me and for millions of evangelicals, is that he supports the kinds of policies that we think are important," Strang said Wednesday on CNN's "New Day."

"He has become a champion of religious rights, of helping persecuted Christians, I could go right down the line," Strang said.

Adding that Trump has been known for his "playboy lifestyle," but "I think he changed. I really do."

"We Christians know that you have to have forgiveness and that God can change lives, and that the leaders in the Bible that we read about from King David on were not perfect," Strang added.

Anchor Alisyn Camerota brought up questions about women who have accused Donald Trump of misconduct.

"That's between them and Donald Trump. This will have to play out," Strang said.

"It's not about those kinds of things. It's about the policies. That's 100 times more important, the direction of our country," Strang said. "God raised up a man that we didn't expect, and that we didn't even like."

There is no evidence that Trump has cheated on his wife in recent years, he continued, and "certainly not since he has been in the White House."

Camerota noted that asking forgiveness for sins is a tenet of the Bible, but Trump has said he has never asked God for forgiveness.

"That's between him and God," Strang replied.
