Republican Sen. Cory Gardner and Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren said in a joint interview Thursday that Russia special counsel Robert Mueller should be allowed to finish his investigation into meddling during the 2016 presidential election.

"I'd like to see it done sooner rather than later for a simple reason," Gardner, the first-term Colorado senator, told Jake Tapper on CNN. "We know there's outside efforts to influence the election of 2016.

"Russia, perhaps others, but we need that information now to get to the voters and protect our systems going into this election."

Warren, long a critic of President Donald Trump, said: "I certainly hope that we have more people standing up for honesty and transparency.

"And, most of all, standing up to let special counsel Mueller finish his investigation without any political interference from Democrats, from Republicans, from anyone," she said.

The senators came together to discuss legislation that would protect the marijuana industry in states that have legalized the drug.

In January, Attorney General Jeff Sessions removed prohibitions that kept federal prosecutors from pursuing cases against people who were following pot laws in states like Colorado and Massachusetts that have legalized the drug.

Marijuana has been fully legalized in eight states, with 24 states allowing some form of use.

"This is a bill that says the states are laboratories of democracy," Gardner told Tapper. "This is the state deciding to change the law — and in that scenario, then the federal government says, fine.

"States will be that laboratory of democracy."

Warren, also in her first term, said that the attorney general's decision "not only creates a risk for people who buy and a risk for people who sell, it creates other crazy implications."

She noted, for instance, marijuana companies are legally barred from depositing funds they derive from their business cannot be deposited in federally insured banks.

"There are federal laws that say if the source of the money is illegal, which would be under federal law, they can't put the money in a bank.

"All kinds of tax crazy implications to this."

Warren said she and Gardner's bill says "if the states have acted on this, whatever level they have acted, then the federal government's going to recede and say your law is the law that controls within your jurisdiction."
