Snowe, Collins Offer Support for START

The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty may be the biggest issue facing the lame-duck Congress after taxes. And in a key development on that front, Maine Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe (pictured) and Susan Collins have announced their support for the nuclear weapons treaty with Russia, The Hill reports.

snow, support, startSnowe declared her support in a statement Friday, promising to vote for the treaty if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid brings it to the floor in the lame-duck session. “I am confident that START will provide predictability in our relationship with Russia and thus enhance global stability, and most importantly, our national security,” Snowe says. “Therefore, if the majority moves to consider START under a framework that allows for sufficient debate and amendments, I intend to support the Resolution of Advice and Consent.”

Shortly after Snowe’s statement, Collins posted a message on Twitter declaring her support for the treaty.
