Sen. Jeff Sessions attacked the Senate immigration reform bill, saying that it would “hammer working Americans.”
“This is far — far too many low-skilled workers that are going to take jobs and pull down wages of people unemployed and underemployed right now,” the Alabama Republican
told Fox Business on Friday. “It's really, really dangerous.”
Sessions, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the bill proposed by the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” senators would prioritize foreign-born workers over those already in the U.S. struggling to find a job.
“People are looking for work in America,” Sessions told Fox. “That’s who we owe our loyalty to first.
“We need to be helping our people get work, get off welfare, get off food stamps, get out there and have that independence that comes from being able to take care of a family and have a retirement plan and healthcare.
“That’s not happening — and we just can’t absorb these many new workers,” Sessions said.
The Judiciary Committee approved the immigration bill this week on a 13-to-5 vote. Sessions voted against the legislation. It is expected to be debated on the Senate floor next month.
