Senators from both parties Tuesday praised Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's decision to cancel the chamber's four-week August recess to address the backlog in acting on President Donald Trump's nominees.

"I commend Sen. McConnell for extending the summer legislative session in the face of unprecedented Democratic obstruction," said Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton. "Though August typically provides an opportunity to hear directly from Arkansans across the state, there's simply too much work left to do.

"In particular, the Senate needs to fund our troops and confirm nominees to the courts and critical government offices," he said.

Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst said that senators "should stay in Washington until we get our job done.

"If that requires us to stay in session 24-hours a day, seven days a week, then that is what we should be doing."

McConnell, the six-term Kentucky Republican, blamed Democrats for the "historic obstruction" that led him to cancel the August recess.

His decision will cut into the campaigning for the November elections, which have 26 Democrats facing re-election bids around the country. Seven are considered vulnerable by political analysts.

By contrast, only nine Republicans are up for re-election this fall, with the one in most jeopardy being Nevada Sen. Dean Heller.

The four-week recess was scheduled to begin on Aug. 6.

"Due to the historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president’s nominees, and the goal of passing appropriations bills prior to the end of the fiscal year, the August recess has been canceled," McConnell said in a statement.

"Senators should expect to remain in session in August to pass legislation, including appropriations bills, and to make additional progress on the president’s nominees."

More than 140 of President Trump's nominees to key positions remain to be confirmed, according to the Partnership for Public Service.

For the Democrats, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said that his party welcomed the cancellation — but that they were going to devote the time to passing healthcare legislation.

"We Democrats welcome this additional time," Schumer told reporters after McConnell's announcement, "because it gives us the opportunity to address an issue that's on the top of the mind of so many of the American people and one that Republicans have badly mishandled up until this point: health care.

"We welcome the opportunity to address it — and we're going to work very hard in August to require our Republican colleagues to do something about it."
