Conservative groups, attacking Democrats over impeachment, are also targeting moderate Republican senators in a bid to bring a swift end to President Donald Trump's trial in the Senate, Politico is reporting.
According to the website, their message is simple: Acquit Trump now and don't call witnesses.
The pro-Trump groups are blitzing moderate senators from both sides. Their campaign includes office visits, phone calls, and TV and digital ads, Politico said.
The targeted lawmakers are Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Mitt Romney of Utah, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, along with Democrats Doug Jones of Alabama, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Gary Peters of Michigan, and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.
The conservative group, FreedomWorks, is being joined in the push by Heritage Action for America, Club for Growth, the Presidential Coalition, and America First Policies.
Politico noted it is similar to the coalition that targeted Democrats in the House before the chamber approved articles of impeachment. Now the groups are pushing the targeted lawmakers not to join with Democrats in voting for any proposals that would lengthen the impeachment trial.
"This trial is about protecting the presidency from the tyranny of the House majority — these are bogus charges, they are not impeachable offenses, and we expect that the Senate will acquit," said Jenny Beth Martin, honorary chairman of Tea Party Patriots Action, who has helped bring the groups together.
"Senators of both parties must make it clear — Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Congressmen Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler cannot be allowed to corrupt the Constitution."
