Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said Thursday that President Donald Trump's impeachment by the House was inevitable, but that the president would get "at least equal time" in a Senate trial — and Grassley would advise Trump to not testify in his defense.
"The House will send over some members who will act as prosecutors and present the case for why the president should be felt guilty," Grassley, former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, explained to Neil Cavuto on Fox News.
"The president will have his lawyers there with at least equal time," he continued. "Nobody knows how much time any of this stuff is going to take.
"But, at least, the White House was going to have equal or more time to present the case of the defense of the president," Grassley said.
He told Cavuto that he did not see the possibility of Trump testifying and "I would advise the president not to.
"I think the president could not be forced to come and testify," he said.
Regardless, President Trump's impeachment is inevitable by the House because Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has the votes, Grassley said.
Democrats control the chamber 233-197, with one independent, Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, who switched from the Republican Party earlier this year.
"They'll all be Democrat votes, I think," Grassley said. "They could lose a few and a few more than they had on the initial vote.
"Her base is so strongly condemning the president that they don't need an excuse to impeach under the Constitution of treason, and bribery, and high crimes and all that sort of stuff.
"They just need to have a good reason."
