Senate Republicans Push Again to Cancel August Recess

More than a dozen Senate Republicans want to cancel the August recess so they get work done on log-jammed nominations and must-pass spending bills, The Washington Post reported.

The effort, led by Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., is a repeat of a push last year — but comes with added pressure: President Donald Trump has said he will not sign another massive spending bill like the $1.3 trillion measure Congress passed in March.

In a letter, the 16 GOP senators say the extra time is needed because of "historic obstruction" by Democrats.

"We stand ready to work Mondays and Fridays, nights as well as weekends, to ensure the funding process is not used to jam the president with a bad spending deal," they wrote to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

"We, and the American people, expect Congress to work tirelessly to restore American greatness."

The senators point out there are just 67 working days left before the end of the fiscal year Sept. 30, and that "leaves only 12 weeks to get 12 appropriations bills out of committee and consider them on the floor."

"That alone is an impossible task," the wrote. "When combined with the crucial need to confirm more nominees, it is clear we do not have enough time."
