Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. welcomed Donald Trump's "shift" on gun laws, but said he had "serious problems" with how the president was approaching the issue.
Schumer's comments came in a series of tweets on Wednesday and followed Trump's announcement that he had directed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to propose rules that would ban bump stocks.
The devices, which make semiautomatic weapons fire at a higher rate, were used in a mass shooting at a Las Vegas music festival in October that left nearly 60 dead.
In addition, Trump has appealed to lawmakers to strengthen background checks on gun buyers.
But Schumer said legislative action — not words — are needed to solve the issue.
Schumer also noted that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives has said it does not have the authority to ban the bump stock devices.
