Senate Conservatives Fund Hits McConnell in Ad on Obamacare

By    |   Friday, 06 September 2013 02:15 PM EDT

The Senate Conservatives Fund has released an ad attacking Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for not pushing to defund Obamacare.

"Obamacare starts in October, but Congress can stop its funding," a narrator says. "What’s Mitch McConnell doing? Nothing. McConnell is the Senate Republican leader, but he refuses to lead on defunding Obamacare."

Story continues below video.

The conservative group is upset with the Kentucky Republican for failing to sign a letter pledging to vote against any government spending bill that allocates money to Obamacare.

The letter was signed by at least 12 GOP senators, who have threatened to block even a stopgap funding resolution that continues to fund the government passed Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.

"What good is a leader like that?” the ad asks. "It's nice that McConnell voted against Obamacare, but we need real leadership to stop it now."

The ad, being aired through Sept. 17, cost $340,000, according to Politico.

So far, the Senate Conservative Fund hasn't followed through on its threat to endorse tea party favorite Matt Bevin in his primary challenge to McConnell's re-election next year.

But it could be just a matter of time.

In addition to its attack on McConnell, the group has released radio ads aimed at putting pressure on GOP Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Thad Cochran of Mississippi, and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

All have refused to join conservative efforts in Congress to defund the healthcare-reform law.
