Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., called on his fellow lawmakers in Congress to "speak of in defense" of special counsel Robert Mueller following President Donald Trump's lawyer's appeal for an end to the Russia probe, The Hill reported Saturday.
"Every member of Congress, Republican and Democrat, needs to speak up in defense of the Special Counsel. Now," Warner tweeted Saturday.
Earlier Saturday morning The Daily Beast reported that Trump's lawyer, John Dowd, had responded to the Friday firing of Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe by appealing to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to end Mueller's probe of claims of Russia collusion in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.
"I pray that Acting Attorney General Rosenstein will follow the brilliant and courageous example of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and bring an end to alleged Russia Collusion investigation manufactured by McCabe's boss James Comey based upon a fraudulent and corrupt Dossier," Dowd commented.
Shortly after The Daily Beast published the article, MSNBC reported Saturday on Twitter that Dowd specified "he was speaking for himself when he called for an end to the Mueller probe" and not on behalf of the president.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced McCabe's firing Friday evening citing reports that revealed leaks he gave the media about FBI investigations and that he lacked "candor" with Justice Department investigators.
