Sen. Kamala Harris Thursday slammed Attorney General William Barr as being "highly irresponsible and frankly unprofessional" and said he should resign after he testified Wednesday that he did not examine underlying evidence behind special counsel Robert Mueller's report before determining that President Donald Trump did not obstruct justice.
"We should assume and expect that he will take his duties seriously and examine and be familiar with the evidence before he makes a decision and announces to the world his decision about whether or not, in this case, the president of the United States, obstructed justice," the California Democrat and presidential candidate, who questioned Barr during the hearing, told CNN's "New Day."
Harris also said Barr did not answer her questions about whether it's been suggested that he conduct investigations into former FBI Director James Comey and others.
"He wanted it to be repeated, which impressed me as he wanted time to really think about how he was going to answer the question," said Harris. "I'm sure he didn't because he knew he was under oath, and he knew he could potentially expose himself to perjury if he didn't answer honestly."
Barr should "conduct himself with the highest level of integrity," but he has not done so, she added, and he "should resign" as he is "clearly biased."
Harris also panned Barr on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," saying that his actions in support of Trump have been an attack on America's democracy.
"If we are going to sustain any belief that the American public, much less our allies or enemies around the world, have in the strength of our democracy, he has contributed to weakening our standing in the world," she commented.
