Sean Spicer: 'Congress Needs to fix What's Going on at the Border'

Sean Spicer: 'Congress Needs to fix What's Going on at the Border'

By    |   Monday, 18 June 2018 11:40 AM EDT

President Donald Trump’s former press secretary, Sean Spicer, called on Congress to find a solution to the problem of separating children from families coming into the United States illegally.

Spicer made his comments during a Monday interview on Fox News.

"I think it is now incumbent upon Congress to recognize we need to find a solution to this broken immigration problem as soon as possible," he said. "It's heartbreaking to watch children separated from their families but we also need to be a nation of laws and recognize that people who are coming in illegally are not following the laws of our country.

Spicer said he hoped images of children separated from their parents would spur congressional action "to fix what's going on at the border."

Asked if the administration would pay a price for the separations, Spicer said: "There's two possibilities. One is I think and hope it does spur action on Congress' behalf. Whether or not it pays a price, I don't know."

He added: "The president's keeping a pledge he made to be strong and tough on the border and immigration. I don't think this is a shock to anybody in terms of the president following through on what he said he would do. This is a guy that knows how to get results and on so many other fronts he's walked up to the cliff; he’s looked over it and said: ‘I’m going to do this’ and demonstrated he's willing to do things other politicians wouldn't do to get a result."

First lady Melania Trump, in a statement issued through her spokeswoman, has called on “both sides of the aisle” to come "together to achieve successful immigration reform. The president’s wife said she "hates to see" children separated from families.
