Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called on President Donald Trump to back off from proposed tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, The Hill is reporting.

Instead, Trump should focus his attention on China, Schumer said.

"The president's instincts to go after China are correct, but the policy he proposes doesn't fit the bill," he said. "It's not well targeted. It's not precise. And as a result, it could cause a mess of collateral damage that hurts America more than it helps.

"The sweeping nature of the tariffs has already angered key allies in Canada and Europe, justifiably, and could draw reciprocal tariffs on American goods."

He said Democrats would likely support Trump if the tariffs targeted China.

"The Trump administration should rethink its approach to sweeping tariffs while there is still time and instead focus its attention on China," he said.

Meanwhile, Trump said on Wednesday that China has been asked to develop a plan to reduce its trade surplus with the U.S.

"We look forward to seeing what idea they come back with,"  Trump said in a tweet.
