Sage Steele Reflects on 'Sad' Biden Interview in '21

By    |   Thursday, 05 October 2023 11:57 AM EDT

President Joe Biden has proven not only to be "a terrible president," according to former sports broadcaster Sage Steele, but his cognitive failures were "sad" even in March 2021.

Steele was still with ESPN when she interviewed Biden for baseball's opening day, but it was "the saddest thing" when she noticed Biden "struggled," "couldn't finish his sentences," and "trailed off," she told "Club Random With Bill Maher" podcast Sunday.

"So forget about politics — I don't care, I didn't vote for him — however, that made me sad," Steele told Maher, who had called for Biden to step out of the 2024 presidential race, warning Democrats that Biden would hand the presidency back to former President Donald Trump.

"The human aspect of what we're witnessing right now, to me, is heartbreaking," Steele said. "And it's inexcusable by the family when you knew during the election."

Biden, now 80, was the oldest president ever elected and the oldest to have served in the White House.

Steele told Maher of how Biden was confused before the interview, telling her random football stories before his video feed was visible.

"He goes, 'I have the best hands,'" Steele said. "What do you say to that? And here's the saddest thing — his voice just trailed off. He said, 'I was good,' and then he went silent, and he goes, 'Uh, never mind.'"

Biden's issues were apparent to Democrats and his campaign operatives in 2020, according to Steele.

"I thought it was so sad, because I realized that's why he was in the basement during the whole election cycle — because even then he couldn't finish his sentences, he struggled," she said.
