House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., ripped into Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, D-N.D., but good Wednesday for his unwillingness to allow a vote on the budget.
Conrad will permit only a superficial mark-up of a bill in his committee, and no vote will be held. The Democratic thinking appears to be that a budget approved by the Democratic Senate won’t make it through the Republican-controlled House in any case, so why cast a budget vote that could prove politically costly?
“I am disappointed to learn that Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad will not follow through on his commitment to advance a budget. The Democrat-controlled Senate’s ongoing failure to pass a budget has become one of the most embarrassing spectacles in Washington,” Ryan said in a statement,
The Hill reports.
“It has been three years since Chairman Conrad last advanced a budget through the U.S. Senate. That budget from 2009 accelerated the looming debt crisis by helping to jam a massive healthcare overhaul into law on a partisan basis.”
Ryan has produced a budget plan, passed by the House last month, which mandates massive cuts in government spending without any new taxes.
