President Donald Trump should view his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as an adversary at the very least, a Russia expert said in a new interview.
Nina Jankowicz, a global fellow at the Kennan Institute and an author who is writing a book on Russia's melding in Eastern European affairs, doled out some advice to Trump ahead of his Monday meeting with Putin during an interview with The Hill.
"Yes, at least an adversary because this is the pattern of behavior we've seen and we certainly shouldn't trust a single word he [Putin] says," said Jankowicz when asked whether Americans should label Putin an enemy.
"I want Trump to come out and say unequivocally, 'Russia meddled in our election' and I want him to press Putin on that."
The two leaders are scheduled to meet in Helsinki during Trump's visit to the European continent. The much-anticipated summit occurs in the wake of Friday's news that the Department of Justice has indicted 12 Russian intelligence officers with hacking into Democrats' computer networks during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.
Russia is suspected of meddling in that election, and special counsel Robert Mueller is conducting a DOJ investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians to defeat democrat Hillary Clinton.
