The uphill path of Sen. Ron Johnson's reelection campaign just got a lot steeper with the victory of Donald Trump as the Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

The newspaper explains that "a staggering level of discord dogging Republicans" over Trump's rise may negatively affect GOP turnout at the polls in November, where Johnson is facing a challenge from Democrat Russ Feingold.

"Put Mitt Romney, George W. Bush or Dwight Eisenhower on the ticket, and that would be a tough race for Ron Johnson no matter what," University of San Francisco political scientist Ken Goldstein told the Journal Sentinel.

Marquette pollster Charles Franklin told the newspaper that it's a "big unknown" as to whether Republicans reluctant to vote for Trump will go to the polls and support other GOP candidates or just stay home.
