Ronald Kessler reporting from Washington, D.C. — The difference in competence between Mitt Romney and President Obama will be the prime focus of Romney’s campaign, Bay Buchanan, senior adviser to Romney, tells Newsmax.
“The game plan is to make distinctions so that the voters see the kind of choice that they truly have,” Buchanan says. “What Mitt Romney represents and what Barrack Obama represents are two entirely different directions and agendas that the American people have on the ballot in November.”

Romney will be reminding Americans of the promises Obama made and the hopes he raised four years ago.
“He will be showing how those hopes have turned out to be false ones, and the promises are now broken ones, and as a result of his policies the country is facing some very, very tough fiscal times,” Buchanan says. “With respect to the 23 million unemployed Americans, the kids are having a terrible time trying to find jobs,” Buchanan says. “More than half of college students can’t find jobs.”
In addition, “Gas prices have doubled under his administration,” she says. “It doesn't appear that Obama really knows what to do. He doesn’t know how to turn this economy around. He is uncertain of what it is that business needs to thrive and to build.”
A media star, Buchanan just came out with “Bay and Her Boys: Unexpected Lessons I Learned as a (Single) Mom.” The book is an insightful, candid guide to bringing up kids, whether for a single or married mother or father.
Among other things, the book reveals how Buchanan got her name. When she came home from the hospital, because he couldn’t pronounce “baby,” her one-year-old brother called her “bay bay.” But as treasurer of the U.S. under President Reagan, Buchanan acceded to her father’s request that she sign her Christian name, Angela, to newly printed currency.
Buchanan became an adviser to Romney in January. In contrast to what she says is Obama’s record of incompetence on the economy, Romney has the ability to set the country on a winning path.
As an outsider, “Romney can make the necessary cuts,” Buchanan says. “He’s not going to be intimidated or concerned about upsetting different elements of the political world. He’s going to make the decisions that are needed.”
At the same time, Romney has the “information, the skills, and the knowledge because he has been there and he has proven himself to be an individual who knows how to turn companies around. He knows the kind of policies that the government has to create and the regulatory environment that needs to be present so that the businesses will thrive and will make the decisions to grow and to hire.”
While there are about a dozen swing states, Romney will be focusing in particular on North Carolina, Virginia and Indiana. “Those are three Republican states,” Buchanan says. “They should be ours. We lost them three years ago. We need to make certain they are solidly in our column.”
In addition, Romney should play well in Ohio and Florida and has a good shot at winning Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and Michigan.
Obama’s position on gay marriage “gives us one more clear distinction between the two candidates,” Buchanan says. “It gives evangelicals and Christian conservatives and social conservatives even more reason to get behind Mitt Romney enthusiastically,” Buchanan says.
Obama’s position also energizes churches.
“There are black churches and evangelical churches where pastors feel very, very strongly on this issue,” Buchanan says.
Buchanan concedes that Obama has come across as more likeable than Romney.
“A lot of these poll numbers are because Republicans spent a year in a primary campaign,” Buchanan says. “We have been in battle on the front lines, beating the devil out of each other, and the other guy has been traveling around the world vacationing and having great photo ops and being the president of the United States.”
Now, Buchanan says, “It is our turn to show what kind of person Mitt Romney is — to show the kind of leadership and the kind of strength, compassion, and warmth he has as an individual.”
